The Georgia Bulldogs’ baseball team has put together quite the start to the baseball season. They were preseason #9 in the polls, but have since moved up to #4 as they head into their weekend series with Vanderbilt. Their run this season has included a huge series win against #12 LSU and a win against #19 Clemson. They gained huge momentum heading into this weekend when they are facing off against the #5 team in the country, the Vanderbilt Commodores. Vanderbilt were the preseason #1 team, and their season has included a win over #11 Texas A&M and a series sweep of #21 Florida. They have won 8 of their last 9 coming into this weekend series, but have still fallen to #5 for some tough losses earlier in the season.
This is by far going to be each of these teams’ series of the year so far. Georgia is coming in riding one of the best two-way players in the country, Aaron Schunk. Schunk grew up in Atlanta and attended the Lovett School where he won two State Championships and a Georgia AA Player of the Year award. Schunk was recruited out of high school by the Bulldogs as mainly a third baseman, but has since shown he has the arm to pitch as well. He has emerged as their main closer and is already leading the Bulldogs in saves with 10 and a 1.88 ERA. Schunk bats third for the Bulldogs with a .322 batting average and 5 homeruns, which is second on the team.
The Bulldogs have their star player in Schunk, and will be looking to use him to the best of his abilities this weekend. The Commodores will know plenty about Schunk and what they need to do to stop him, so they will try their best. This series will come down to who wants it more, and there will not be a bigger series the rest of the year until the playoffs for either team.
