The SEC Student-Athlete Advisory Council met at the SEC offices in Birmingham, Alabama on February, 7th. Twenty eight student-athletes apart of SAAC gathered to meet for the main reason to become better leaders relating to sports and life challenges. The meeting provides the student-athletes with campus leaders and staff from the SEC conference. The meeting covered many topics and activities to help student-athletes lead and overcome challenges in their life. The meeting covered a presentation on leadership by Growing Leaders, a talk with the SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, a review of NCAA and SEC legislative with the SEC Assistant Commissioner and an open discussion with the Director of Student-Athlete Engagement about how to balance academics and athletics, but also how to get involved with the community and with careers. At the end of the meeting, the group will vote on who will be officers to lead the organization. The members involved in SAAC are apart of various sports (football, volleyball, wrestling, tennis, golf, swimming, soccer and track) who come to learn and lead together.

I am a student-athlete as well who is also apart of SAAC. After I found this story, I was encouraged to hear that SAAC is growing and more athletes are taking apart of this organization. I think this is a great opportunity for athletes to be educated on how to balance their lives but also get involved. With their busy lives, they are given a chance to be apart of a group that enhances their learning and leading experience.
